Course Description
Essential vocabulary and phrases necessary for day-to-day life in China are the primary learning goals. The Chinese phonetic transcription system (pinyin) will be used throughout the course. Basic information concerning Chinese grammar and characters will be introduced. Characters commonly used in public signs will also be taught. Course materials are in the form of handouts containing vocabulary and sentence patterns in pinyin, Chinese and English. Cultural and practical information will also be provided in the form of handouts after each session.(More info)

1. Greetings and self-introduction; classroom Chinese; small talk, asking and answering questions
2. Taking taxi & bus; making complaints
3. How to read a menu; ordering food and drinks; paying the bill; monetary system in China
4. Asking for help; dealing with emergency
5. Shopping; bargaining; measurements in China
6. Booking train/flight tickets
7. Asking directions, distance; getting your bike fixed
8. Making phone calls and purchasing phone cards
9. At the post office; collecting and sending letters/parcels
10. Asking the time; time, morning, afternoon, day, week, month, year
11. Talking about weather and hobbies
12. Personal questions; responding to personal questions foreigners often hear in China
