Business Chinese - Daily Communication

This course is designed for foreign businessmen who have just begun learning Chinese. Its aim is to help them acquire necessary Chinese language knowledge and skills that may be needed in their communication with Chinese people at their workplace or in their daily life. The Business Chinese course will dramatically reduce the language barrier between foreign and Chinese staff improving communication between all employees and increasing efficiency in the work place.

  • On completion of course they will have learned Chinese phonetics, basic Chinese grammar, over 200 commonly used sentence patterns, about 1000 words and 400 characters.

  • The syllabus is based on Gateway to Business Chinese, Daily Communication - a textbook which will be used throughout the course. Supplementary handouts, listening and reading materials from other Chinese textbooks will also be used in every lesson.

With a focus on communication skills in business environment, the course is organized to cover the following aspects:

Topic 1 Making and receiving phone calls at the office and home
Topic 2 Getting about by taxi
Topic 3 Asking directions: finding your way in an unfamiliar place
Topic 4 Overcoming language obstacles: expressing yourself and clarifying meaning
Topic 5 Time, making arrangements and planning your schedule
Topic 6 Ordering goods: bargaining and negotiating prices
Topic 7 Wining & dining with colleagues, business partners and customers; table etiquette.
Topic 8 Money matters: depositing and withdrawing money
Topic 9 Renting an apartment; negotiating a price; signing a contract
Topic 10 Visa matters: extending, renewing and changing visas
Topic 11 Get in touch with companies and going through necessary formalities
Topic 12 In the office: asking for help, overcoming difficulties
Topic 13 Making, cancelling and rearranging appointments
Topic 14 Meetings and discussing contract details
Topic 15 Travelling around China: Booking tickets and making reservations
Topic 16 Outside the office: leisure time, in the bar, socialising with colleagues
  • Each unit contains:
    Commercial Chinese expressions with English explanation - grouped together according to the unit topic

    • Commonly used basic commercial vocabulary with English explanation - provided after each dialogue

    • Pronunciation drills

    • Chinese characters - these will be taught as a supplementary tool in this course. Learners will decide for themselves whether to learn them or not

    • Grammar points and phonetics with English explanation

    • Exercises - written and oral

    • Cultural notes in English - brief accounts of Chinese society, culture, customs and commercial background knowledge.


  • Course length: 8 weeks, 4 hours/week (weekends or evenings depending on your needs)

  • On-site/off-site training: at our premises on Shanxi Road or at your company
